ITN America

Independent Transportation Network of America (ITNAmerica) is a national non-profit transportation network of community-based senior transportation programs.

Service Provided

Transportation is provided by private automobiles 24 hours a day to seniors, for any purpose, through a combination of paid and volunteer drivers across 13 ITN communities

Intended Users

The main target group are the elderly and those with visual impairments in small towns and rural areas in the US.

Benefits

ITN America ensures older people in rural communities have access to quality transportation options, connecting them to critical health services and promoting social inclusion.

Service Details

In ITN communities, members can call for a ride anywhere in their affiliate’s service area and for any reason.

The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

ITN America uses a proprietary logistics software ITNRides 2.0 on the Salesforce platform utilizing Esri routing algorithms to manage volunteers, requests for rides, and payments.

ITN affiliates provided 780,000 rides in 2022.

Financial Details

Members pay for rides with transportation credits which can be earned by driving, issued in exchange for trading in a vehicle through the CarTrade program, shared among friends, and traded among communities.

ITN America has additional programs for local businesses, health services and entire communities to subsidize transportation credits for seniors. While fees are collected from members who have insufficient transportation credits, additional community programs also subsidize fees for low-income seniors.

Fees account for less than 10% of ITN America’s revenue; contributions and grants cover the remainder.

About the Service Providers

Map of ITN locations

ITN Portland began in 1995; ITN America was founded in 2006 as more communities created local ITN groups. Currently, ITN affiliates work in 13 communities across the U.S. The organization is involved in research, policy, advocacy, and education. In addition to 13 ITN affiliate communities, ITN also supports dozens of Trusted Transportation Partners across the country, manages the Rides in Sight website that catalogs senior travel services, and provides the ITNCountry program which is a package of modern tools to manage volunteers and organize rides. There were more than 90 network providers across the US in 2022.

ITN affiliates and Trusted Transportation Providers are located in small cities and rural counties in the US where limited or non-existent public transportation make life difficult without a personal car and the ability to drive.
