Free rental of inclusive electric tricycles by Vélo’v Benur

The City of Lyon’s bike-sharing service, Vélo’v, provided Benur electric tricycles for free rental to Vélo’v members during the second half of 2022.

Service Provided

In 2022, Vélo’v bike-sharing added Benur electric tricycles to their fleet as an additional service for members to rent for free.

Intended Users

The Benur electric tricycle is operated with hands rather than legs so it can be used by people who cannot pedal with their legs or feet. The tricycle has a ramp to accommodate wheelchair users, two adults, or families. Other users who do not use a wheelchair but who have difficulty standing for long periods can also use the Benur bike by utilizing the removable seat.

Benefits

The program expands the opportunity to use the Vélo’v service in Lyon to people with physical disabilities, the elderly, and families.

Service Details

From 3 June 2022 through the end of 2022, it was possible to book a Benur bike for half a day, a day, or two days for Vélo’v members.

It was necessary to book the bikes 48 hours in advance using the Vélo’v website. Members could pick up a Benur bike at the Cordeliers Vélo’v station in central Lyon where a Vélo’v advisor was available to explain how the bike works.

The Benur bike was designed and manufactured in France by The Benur bike has electric assistance with a range of 80km and can go up to 25km per hour.

Financial Details

The Vélo’v annual subscription costs €15 to €31.

Members can use the Benur bikes completely free of charge.

Grand Lyon and JCDecaux jointly funded the pilot.

About the Service Providers

Vélo'v started in 2005 as the primary bikesharing service in Lyon operated by JCDecaux. After a major expansion in 2018, Vélo'v has 428 stations and 5,000 bicycles across 22 municipalities in the Lyon metropolitan area. The program experienced its highest ridership in 2021 at 9.1 million rentals. Benur is a French company started by Joseph Mignozzi and has been designing electric-assisted tricycles for people with reduced mobility since 2017.

Grand Lyon supports 1.4 million residents in the east-central region of France. Lyon was the first city in France to introduce a bike-sharing service.
