WienMobil's shared bikes with child seats

Vienna’s public transport operator’s bike sharing service, WienMobil Rad, offers bikes outfitted with a child seat as part of its regular bike share fleet, and 9 electric cargo (E-cargo) bikes suitable for carrying children are available at 4 bike share stations.

Service Provided

WienMobil Rad is the bike sharing service offered by Wiener Linien, Vienna’s public transit provider. As part of the shared bike fleet, there are a minimum of 50 shared bikes with children’s seats. Child seats on WienMobil bikes are approved for transporting children aged between nine months and eight years, with a maximum load capacity of 20 kg

Intended Users

The WienMobil Rad service aims to be accessible to everyone living in or visiting Vienna. For the bikes outfitted with child seats this includes those people wanting to travel by shared bike with a child – parents with a child, grandparent(s) with a grandkid, caregivers, etc.

Benefits

Having the child seat equipped bikes available as part of the regular bike share fleet allows people who are transporting a child to use shared bikes as easily as other bike share system users.
The E-cargo bikes allow people who are transporting two children to use shared bikes to do so.

Service Details

The shared bikes outfitted with child seats have been a part of the WienMobil Rad service since service implementation began in April 2022. The total number of bikes with child seats available varies seasonally, with a minimum of 50 in winter and reaching 200 in summer. These bikes can be used like other standard shared bikes in the bike share system, able to be picked up and returned to any station in the network.

The stations with E-cargo bikes are part of urban development areas and these bikes are made available through developer contributions as a condition of property development. The E-cargo bikes must be returned to the specific station they are picked up from. The E-cargo bikes have two seat belts and a load capacity of 70 kilograms.

TThe standard rate for the bikes with child seats is .75€ per 30 minutes, and an annual pass for no-cost 30-minute rentals costs 59€.
