Engaging with parents on a new shared-bike service

Participants: Parents

Co-creation format: Pilot Appraisal and Field Trip

Co-creation phase: Co-develop

The Project

NOMADES is a new bike-sharing service for schools. Supported by teams from the town of Saint-Quentin, NOMADES deploys fleets of bikes in primary schools to offer teachers school trips on wheels. This project will help to promote cycling culture from an early age, increase the number of opportunities for school outings and reduce the need for buses.

Why is co-creation needed?

As a new service in Saint-Quentin, there was hesitation from parents in involving their children in the scheme. We anticipated that and want to better involve parents in the experiment to secure their support as a key stakeholder.

How the co-creation event was done

Description and objectives

We invited parents to the school for a workshop of two hours to present them the NOMADES project. We wanted to anticipate their concerns, the main one being the safety of children during the project. To that end, we presented in details how the fleet of vehicles would be used and what the first itinerary would be. Together, we made some tweaks to the route and had an itinerary ready for the project.

Group size: 25 parents
Duration: 2 hours
Venue: School Hall

Workshop activities
The workshop featured a presentation, discussion and co-creation of the route.

Insights from the Workshop

  • Parents were actually not as scared for the safety of the children as much as we expected.
  • As the first itinerary was going from the school to a common cantine, there were more scared about whether their children would have sufficient time to eat.

Reflections on the Workshop

Reservations from key target groups were not as expected, highlighting the value of active co-creation.
